increase blog readership

This is a guest post by Heather on tips to increase blog readership. You can read the guidelines for guest posting at our guest posting guidelines page.

You spent hours perfecting your design.

You hired a top-notch designer to create a professional logo.

You spent weeks submitting your blog to every directory you could.

You posted your ads and your affiliate links, and you’re ready to start watching the visitors roll in.

But…. you’re still the only one at the party.

No one is commenting on your blog, and the few visitors you have are likely your mom and your friends.

What’s happening? Why isn’t anyone reading your blog?

Here are 5 reasons that might explain it. These are things that you might want to work on to increase blog readership.

It’s All about You

Yes, everything that your kids say is precious, and every twitch of your cat’s tail is adorable – to you. Maybe your lunch was delicious, and yes, it would be fun to go to the beach this summer – but you don’t need to share these thoughts with your readers.

Unless your blog is branded specifically as a personal blog, then sharing these kinds of details should be left to conversations with your friends (the only ones who will be reading your blog anyway, if this is the content).

If, on the other hand, your blog is about finance, talk about finance, not about your own shopping spree (unless it warns them about the dangers of easy credit).

In other words: Stick to the topic at hand and how it will help your readers. This is what will help increase blog readership.

Don’t turn your blog into a diary: Unless you’re Brad Pitt, the only people who want to read your diary are your mom and your girlfriend.

It’s Too Promotional

If you’re reading this site and this article, you’re likely blogging to generate income (or to become an Internet celebrity – the point of which is likely also to make money).

However, crowding your page with banner ads and affiliate links will only turn away readers. Posts shouldn’t focus on promoting products or affiliate sales. Instead, they should offer some value to the reader in the form of useful information or entertainment.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t post ads or write promotional content for your blog. You just have to know how to balance these interests and how to write posts that can be both beneficial for your readers and promotional – such as writing a post about popular SEO plugins that can help them boost traffic (and, if they buy, give you an affiliate commission). This will help you generate some decent income as well increase blog readership.

It’s Boring

There are a number of reasons that your blog can appear dry, academic or just plain weak:

  • Overly formal tone
  • Lack of a strong voice
  • Poor headlines
  • Too much text
  • Refusal to take a stand on an issue

The most engaging blogs have a strong writer’s voice and take a clear stand on issues, especially if they are controversial.

The tone is conversational, like that of two friends talking.

They have informative and evocative headlines and large, engaging photos. Graphics and other interactive elements are used throughout the page. Text is broken up into digestible bits, including bolded terms and bulleted lists.

One of the strategies to increase blog readership is to create a more engaging blog that will attract the attention and interest of the readers.

Take a second look at your posts. How do they measure up on these qualities?

Content is Sporadic

If you only post once a week or once a month, of if there’s no pattern at all to when you post and new articles just appear spontaneously, not only will you lose page rank, but you’ll quickly lose reader interest. No one wants to work for your content.

Checking back every day to see if you have new content only to find none will make readers want to stop trying. Readers who are subscribed to your posts will simply forget about your blog – and stop caring.

Stay top of mind – and top of your ranking potential – by writing regular, quality content.

You Don’t Promote It

You may have some of the best content on the Web, but if no one knows about it, no one will be reading it. Make sure you are using effective SEO strategies, including proper keyword usage, link building, guest posting, and building relationships with the readers you do have and other bloggers in your niche.

The more you do to improve your page rank, the higher your page rank and the more visitors you will attract.
