Kie.ai vs fal.ai vs WaveSpeed: What I Actually Pay to Make YouTube Videos With AI

Kie AI gives me my cheapest images, at about three cents each. It is also the provider that ran out of balance halfway through a video.

That one line sums up this whole comparison. The cheapest provider is not always the one that finishes the job.

Every one of them bills through some mix of Kie.ai, fal.ai, and WaveSpeed. This post shows what each one actually costs me, per image, per clip, and per video.

Kie AI (Kie.ai) is an API marketplace that resells access to image, video, music, and voice models on a prepaid credit system. fal.ai is a pay-per-call platform for running open and commercial generative models through one API. WaveSpeed is a prepaid API platform built around fast image and video generation, including the Wan 2.2 video models.

Why I Track AI Video Costs Down to the Cent

Faceless channels live or die on cost per video. I covered the income side in how to make money blogging, and the same arithmetic applies here.

A channel that earns little in its first six months cannot carry a $5 production bill per upload. So I measure every call.

I spent six years in CA articleship and my first finance job before my corporate career. Tracking every rupee became a habit I never lost. When I started making AI videos, I logged every API call against the balance it drained.

That log is where every number below comes from. I did not copy these from pricing pages.

Each platform wins a different job in my pipeline. Kie AI is cheapest for images and music, WaveSpeed is my default for animated clips, and fal.ai is my fallback and voiceover provider. None of them wins everything.

Now let me break down what each one looks like inside a real video.

What Kie AI Costs Me on Real Videos

Kie AI costs me roughly $0.03 per image using gpt-image-2, and $0.06 per music request using Suno V6. It is the cheapest line in two of my three channels. The catch is that its prepaid balance needs watching.

On Top5BestPicks, gpt-image-2 through Kie AI costs about 6 credits per image. That works out to roughly $0.03.

A typical video uses 13 images. So the whole image budget for a 9-minute video is about $0.39.

That is the smallest line on the bill. Eh! It is almost a rounding error next to the clips.

Kie AI for music

Sacred Gayatri runs Suno V6 through Kie AI. Each request costs 12 credits, about $0.06, and returns two variations.

The detail I like most is that failed tasks are not billed. When a generation errors out, the credits stay in my account.

That matters more than it sounds. On music, I sometimes run three or four attempts before one fits the track.

Where Kie AI let me down

Two problems showed up in my run logs. First, the ElevenLabs voice proxy on Kie.ai failed on all three sub-models I tried, so I sent audio straight to ElevenLabs instead.

Second, on video T5-02 for Top5BestPicks, my Kie.ai balance ran short mid-video. I had to switch that video's remaining images to fal.ai to finish it.

Neither problem is a dealbreaker. Both are reasons I never run a channel on Kie.ai alone.

What fal.ai Pricing Looks Like in Practice

fal.ai costs me about $0.025 per image on flux/dev and $0.18 to $0.45 per video for Kokoro voiceover. It is rarely the cheapest option for one job, but it runs almost everything. That makes it my safety net.

The fal.ai image bill on Ancient Cold Case

Ancient Cold Case is my most image-heavy channel. Each episode runs $2.14 to $3.54 in total.

Roughly two thirds of that bill is fal.ai flux/dev images at about $0.025 each. History stories need many scenes, and scenes add up fast.

Look, $0.025 sounds tiny. Multiply it by a long script and it becomes the biggest line on the invoice.

Top5BestPicks uses Kokoro text-to-speech through fal.ai. A full voiceover costs between $0.18 and $0.45, depending on script length.

That range is wide because my scripts vary. A 9-minute product roundup with five picks runs longer than one with three.

fal.ai as the fallback

The real value of fal.ai showed up on the day Kie.ai ran dry. I pointed the same image job at fal.ai and the video finished the same day.

Having a second provider already set up with a funded balance is cheap insurance. I recommend it to anyone running more than one video a week.

What WaveSpeed AI Costs Per Clip

WaveSpeed costs me $0.10 per clip using wan-2.2 image-to-video at 720p, ultra-fast mode. On Top5BestPicks, clips are the largest single cost. The downside is a prepaid balance that can stop a run cold.

The clip math on Top5BestPicks

Each Top5BestPicks video uses 6 landscape clips for the main video and 5 vertical clips for Shorts. That is 11 clips.

At $0.10 each, clips cost $1.10 per video. I measured that directly from the balance before and after each run.

The full video, including images, clips, and voiceover, lands between $1.67 and $1.94. So WaveSpeed is more than half of the total.

WaveSpeed also runs image models. flux-1.1-pro-ultra costs $0.06 per image there, the same price I see on fal.ai for that model.

I do not use it for my bulk images, because Kie.ai is cheaper for the stills I need. It is a useful option if you want one balance to cover both images and clips.

The funding limit that stopped my run

On 20 September 2026, a Top5BestPicks run stopped halfway. WaveSpeed showed $1.08 available against $2.20 needed for the next batch.

Nothing broke. The platform simply refused the job until I recharged.

That is the prepaid trade-off. You never get a surprise bill, but you can get a surprise stop.

For animated clips at volume, WaveSpeed's Wan 2.2 at $0.10 per clip was the cheapest AI video generator in my own tests. For stills, Kie AI was cheapest. The cheapest total bill comes from mixing providers, not picking one.

Here is why a single-provider setup costs more. Each platform prices some models low and others high, because each negotiates its own deals.

When I split jobs across all three, Top5BestPicks lands under $2 per video. If I ran every job through one platform, I would pay more on at least one line.

Does that mean you need three accounts on day one? Not really.

Start with one provider for your biggest cost, which is usually clips. Add a second only when you have posted at least 10 videos and know your real volume.

A note on subscription video apps

Subscription apps bundle these same models behind a monthly fee. They make sense if you want a simple interface and make few videos.

Who Should Pick Which Provider

Pick based on the job that costs you the most, not the brand you heard of first. Each provider suits a different kind of creator. Here is how I would advise a friend starting a faceless channel this month.

Pick Kie.ai first if your videos are mostly stills

Kie.ai suits slideshow-style channels, list videos, and anything built on still images with pans and zooms. It also suits music channels, because Suno V6 requests cost $0.06 and failed tasks cost nothing.

It does not suit you if you cannot check a balance at least twice a week. The mid-video stall on T5-02 happened because I stopped watching.

Pick fal.ai first if you want one account that runs almost anything

fal.ai suits someone still testing formats. You can try a voice model on Monday and an image model on Tuesday without opening a new account.

It does not suit a very image-heavy script if cost is your main worry. On Ancient Cold Case, flux/dev images eat roughly two thirds of every episode's bill.

Pick WaveSpeed first if motion is your main cost

WaveSpeed suits product roundups, Shorts-heavy channels, and anything that animates stills into short clips. At $0.10 per clip, 11 clips cost $1.10, which is easy to plan around.

It does not suit you if you make fewer than four clips a month. At that volume, a free tier somewhere else will cover you, and a prepaid balance just sits idle.

Which one I chose, and why I kept all three

I started with a single provider and got burned twice. Now each channel has a primary provider for its biggest cost and fal.ai funded as the backup.

That setup costs me nothing extra, because unused prepaid balance stays in the account. It has already saved one upload, T5-02, from missing its scheduled day.

Before you pick any provider, work out what one video will cost you. This worksheet takes about 10 minutes. Fill it in with your own script length and the live prices on each platform.

1. Count your images. Multiply by the per-image price. My Top5BestPicks example: 13 images x $0.03 = $0.39.
2. Count your clips. Include Shorts. My example: 11 clips x $0.10 = $1.10.
3. Price your voiceover. Estimate from script length. My example: $0.18 to $0.45.
4. Add music if you use it. My Sacred Gayatri example: $0.06 per request, and plan for 3 attempts.
5. Add a 20% retry buffer. Some generations miss and need a second run.
6. Multiply by videos per month. Four videos a week means 16 to 17 videos.
7. Fund each prepaid balance for two full videos. This stops the mid-run halt I hit on 20 September.

Here is my own worked total for Top5BestPicks. $0.39 plus $1.10 plus $0.45 at the top end gives $1.94 per video.

At 16 videos a month, that is about $31. Add the 20% buffer, and I plan for roughly $37.

That number tells you whether a channel can pay for itself. If your channel earns less than its monthly production cost, fix the cost before you scale the output.

Common Mistakes When Comparing AI API Costs

Most people compare these platforms on headline price per call. The real cost depends on retries, failed jobs, and how often a run stalls. Here are the four mistakes I see and made myself.

Mistake 1: Comparing the price page, not the bill. A cheap model that fails half the time costs double. Kie AI's rule of not billing failed tasks changes the real math on music.

Mistake 2: Running everything through one balance. When that balance runs dry, your whole video stops. I learned this on T5-02.
